Please read the following frequently asked questions before contacting Student Business Services.

What must I do to graduate?

You must fulfill all the conditions for eligibility to graduate before the cut-off date specified for your ceremony. You may confirm your course completion by checking your 'Course Status' on QUT Virtual after exam results are released. If your 'Course Status' is not 'Complete' and you believe you should be eligible to graduate, you should contact Student Records.

When will I be notified of my eligibility to graduate?

Students who fulfill all the conditions for eligibility to graduate will be automatically allocated to scheduled graduation ceremonies after their exam results are released and their Course Status on QUT Virtual is 'Complete'. When this happens, they may view their graduation ceremony details and register to attend, graduate in absentia or defer to a later graduation ceremony via the on-line graduation registration system at QUT Virtual by selecting the 'View ceremonies menu' and following the registration instructions.

In addition, you should ensure your QUT Virtual mailing address is kept current, and check your QUT email account on a regular basis for updates.

How many guest tickets can I purchase, and how much do they cost?

The number of tickets you may purchase will depend on the size of your ceremony. We limit the number of tickets per graduand before a certain date so each graduand will be able to obtain tickets for their guests. After that, tickets sales are unrestricted. Guest tickets cost $16.80 (including GST), and may be purchased from QTIX on 13 62 46 or (61 7) 3840 7551 (if calling internationally). Booking charges apply.

Children over two years of age require tickets. They must be closely supervised and accompanied by an adult (who is not graduating) at all times as childcare services are not available.

Do graduands require tickets?

When you register your graduation attendance status via QUT Virtual, you will be provided with immediate online confirmation of the option you had selected. This will act as your ticket for entry to QPAC. Please print a copy for your record as we are unable to individually confirm each graduand's submission. You may revisit your graduation ceremony details on QUT Virtual to alter your attendance status (until the ceremony RSVP date) or review your ceremony details.

A bulk email will also be sent to all Attending students one week prior to their ceremony, to confirm their attendance.

What should I wear to my graduation ceremony?

In addition to correct academic regalia, you are required to dress smartly for your graduation ceremony and use footwear for safety. Please ensure your hair is styled in a manner suitable for wearing a mortarboard, and refrain from wearing body glitter or mohair garments which might soil your academic regalia and incur additional cleaning charges.

If you have questions about what you should wear, please contact the Student Guild Academic Dress Hire on 07 3274 1473.

How do I hire or purchase QUT academic regalia, and what does it look like?

Correct academic regalia is compulsory, and faculty colours are shown on the Student Guild web site.

If you submit your on-line graduation registration indicating your attendance, your academic regalia will be automatically booked for you. Regalia hire is $60.00 (incl. GST), and payment is by cash or cheque upon collection at your ceremony venue. Regalia must be returned immediately after your ceremony.

Will I be able to have my photo taken at my ceremony?

Flash photography is not permitted in the Concert Hall, but fast film may be used.

Official ceremony photographers, Elite Photographics, will have studios at the ceremony venue before and after your ceremony. They  offer complimentary portrait sittings for graduands and their families, and will have studios at the ceremony venue for photographs before and after your ceremony. We recommend having all your photos taken prior to your ceremony to avoid queuing after. Elite Photographics can be contacted on 07 3870 5373.

How do I obtain my graduation parchment?

Please note that we will not be able to issue your parchment before your graduation ceremony because degrees are conferred by cohort (not individually) by the University Academic Board, and your parchment would not be valid until its conferral date.

The online graduation registration system will provide you with three options.

  • If you choose to attend your ceremony, your parchment will be presented to you during your ceremony.
  • If you decide not to attend your ceremony, your parchment will be mailed to you after all ceremonies for your semester of completion are over .
  • If you wish to defer to a later ceremony, your parchment will be mailed to you with instructions on how to allocate yourself to the next round of ceremonies.

If you  live locally and  have not received your parchment six weeks after your graduation ceremony,  please check that you have not missed a delivery notice from Australia Post. If your local Post Office is not holding your graduation parchment for collection, you must email us within three months of your ceremony to obtain your parchment's Registered Post number. If you fail to notify us during this specified time frame, you will have to submit a RP Form - Request for Replacement Parchment.
