[Print-friendly version]

When you pay your student contribution, you are paying for some of the cost of your university education while the Australian Government, through the Commonwealth Grant Scheme (CGS), pays the balance of the costs involved. The Government offers assistance in paying your student contribution through the Higher Education Loan Program, HECS-HELP.

Three ways to pay

HECS-HELP provides three ways of paying your student contribution.

Note: you must determine your choices depending on the type of student you are eg domestic undergraduate, international post graduate.

Note: Until you notify the University of your preferred method of paying your student contribution the University is unable to calculate your correct fees. Notification to the University is done by completing the Commonwealth assistance form and submitting it.

Up-front payment

Some people can afford to pay all their student contribution for the teaching period up-front at the beginning of the teaching period. If you can do this, there is a bonus of a 20% discount on what you pay to QUT.

To obtain an accurate statement of your fees and discount and to enable you sufficient time to pay before the census date, you must complete your eCAF by the University's preferred date.

Partial up-front payment

You may find that you have enough money to pay some of your student contribution up-front but not all of it. In this case, you can make a partial up-front payment to QUT, and if you pay $500 or more, you will still receive a 20% discount on the amount you pay to QUT. You will also receive the discount if your total bill is less than $500 and you pay in full.

To obtain an accurate statement of your fees and discount and to enable you sufficient time to pay before the census date, you must complete your eCAF by the University's preferred date.

Commonwealth assistance for payment

Most students find they cannot pay their student contribution up-front. This is why there is a system for you to apply for Commonwealth assistance until you can afford it, which is usually when you start earning enough income. The Government sets income levels for when you must start paying back your HECS-HELP debt.

For the most comprehensive information on Commonwealth assistance, go to the Australian Government goingtouni web site.

Commonwealth Assistance Notice: irrespective of which payment option you choose QUT is obliged to send you a written Commonwealth Assistance Notice. This is not an invoice or a request for payment.
