General information

Fees at QUT including additional compulsory material costs

When you enrol at QUT you will be liable for a number of fees. These may include tuition fees for full fee places, student contributions for Commonwealth supported students, and additional compulsory material costs associated with particular units.

Remember also that the cost of university study includes much more than tuition fees. You must be prepared for general living expenses including accommodation; telephone, gas and electricity bills; textbooks and photocopying; food and transport. You will also need money to cover spending for medical bills, recreational activities, clothing, stationery, etc.

Fee assistance is available

Eligible domestic students in full fee places and Commonwealth supported places may apply for assistance through the
Higher Education Loan Program (HELP).

Help to calculate your fees

Further information is available to help you calculate your student contribution amount or tuition fees for a teaching period. You can confirm your fees by checking the Fee Schedule.

How and when QUT reviews fees

QUT has historically reviewed tuition fees on an annual basis. These rates are published by 1 October of each year for the following year in accordance with our obligations under the Higher Education Support Act 2003.

Domestic students

Undergraduate courses

If you are a domestic student (Australian citizen, New Zealand citizen resident in Australia, or holder of an Australian permanent resident visa or a holder of a permanent humanitarian visa), you may be offered a Commonwealth supported place or a full fee-paying place (Dfee) in an undergraduate course at QUT.

Note: From mid-2008 QUT will no longer offer Dfee places to commencing students.

Commonwealth supported places

You will be required to pay a student contribution amount towards the cost of your education and the Commonwealth Government will pay the balance.

If you are an Australian citizen or a holder of a permanent humanitarian visa you will be eligible for Commonwealth assistance with paying your student contribution amount through HECS-HELP. It is a loan from the Government and provides the following payment options:

  • pay all or $500 or more of your student contribution up-front and receive a 20% discount
  • defer your re-payment of the loan until you start earning enough money to pay back the debt you accumulated over the course of your study to the Government through the Australian Taxation Office.

If you are a holder of an Australian Permanent Resident visa or a New Zealand citizen you must pay your student contribution amount up-front with no discount.

HECS-HELP contains more details. Table D in the Fee Schedule lists which undergraduate courses are not covered by HECS-HELP.

Full fee-paying domestic undergraduate place (Dfee)

An Australian citizen or a holder of a permanent humanitarian visa who is offered this type of place will be eligible to apply for Commonwealth assistance to pay their tuition fee through FEE-HELP. More information about how to change from a Dfee place to a CSP place is available. From mid-2008 QUT will no longer offer Dfee places to commencing students.

Note: If you wish to avoid the late payment penalty fee you should complete the 'Request for FEE-HELP Assistance' form prior to the due date for payment on your Statement of Account. Late payment penalty fees cannot be deferred to FEE-HELP and you must pay this fee to QUT.

A holder of an Australian permanent resident visa or a New Zealand citizen is not eligible for FEE-HELP.

Postgraduate courses

You may either be Commonwealth supported or pay tuition fees depending on your circumstances and the type of course. Check your offer letter.

Tuition fees: if you are paying tuition fees, you can pay these fees up-front; or if you are an Australian citizen or a holder of a permanent humanitarian visa, you will be eligible for assistance under FEE-HELP.

Note: If you wish to avoid the late payment penalty fee you should complete the 'Request for FEE-HELP Assistance' form prior to the due date for payment on your Statement of Account. Late payment penalty fees cannot be deferred to FEE-HELP and you must pay this fee to QUT.

Check the Fee Schedule also.

Commonwealth supported place: you will pay a student contribution amount and may be eligible for HECS-HELP. You pay the student contribution amount up-front, or if you are an Australian citizen or a holder of a permanent humanitarian visa, you will be eligible for assistance under HECS-HELP and have the same payment options as undergraduate Commonwealth supported students (see above). Check the Fee Schedule also.

Summer program and cross-institutional courses

In most cases you pay tuition fees. Check the Fee Schedule for more information.

Non-award courses (includes certificates, advanced certificates and visiting students)

You will pay tuition fees up-front to QUT. You are not eligible for Commonwealth assistance. Tuition fee rates are available from the Fee Schedule.

International students

You will pay your tuition fees up-front as you are not eligible for Commonwealth assistance unless you are a holder of a permanent humanitarian visa. Your fees depend on the course you enrol in. Check Table C: International Student Tuition Fee for more information.
