Why QUT?

[Print-friendly version]

QUT recognises a wide range of qualifications and experience in the admission process. The QUT
publication Real Options explains the various ways you can meet our entry requirements.

If your current academic qualifications will not get you into your preferred course immediately, there are a number of different pathways for you to consider. At QUT you should consider:

  • another QUT course within the same faculty, or a different faculty
  • a fee-paying place in the same course (where available)
  • a dual TAFE-Qld/QUT award course where you commence studies at TAFE-Qld and progress to QUT.

Upgrading through full-time study

The highest admission ranks are obtained through good results in a university bachelor degree course. Because QUT cannot predict the cut-off scores that will be required for entry in the future, we suggest you try to achieve the highest admission rank possible. We suggest you first consider one of these options:

  • one full-time year in a bachelors course or in individual unit studies
    (called Visiting Studies)
    • 8 units (96 credit points) at QUT
    • grade of 4 (pass) or better in all units can achieve a rank in the
      range 93-99
  • three quarters of one full-time year in a bachelors course or in individual unit studies
    • 6 units (72 credit points) at QUT
    • grade of 4 (pass) or better in all units can achieve a rank in the
      range 84-94
  • completion of a TAFE-Qld advanced diploma
    • grade of 4 (pass) or better in all units can achieve a rank in the
      range 93-98
  • completion of a TAFE-Qld diploma
    • grade of 4 (pass) or better in all units can achieve a rank in the
      range 87-91.

Upgrading through part-time study

While most students looking to upgrade will study full time, QUT recognises part-time study is the only option for some students. Studies in as few as two and up to five QUT units can now be converted to a rank for use in competing for admission to a course. There are some associated conditions:

  • The units are 12 credit point QUT units studied at QUT within a degree or non-award course.
  • A passing grade point average (4.00 or better) is achieved in the two, three, four or five units studied.
  • Admission ranks are allocated on the basis of the grade point average achieved.
  • There is a cap on the highest admission rank allocated. Be careful to make sure these studies achieve an admission rank sufficient for entry to your preferred course in the future:
    • for two & three units: can achieve admission ranks in the range 75-85
    • for four & five units: can achieve admission ranks in the range 77-88.

Visiting Studies

Visiting Studies applications are made directly to QUT Student Business Services on the V Form.
Unit information is available in the QUT Handbook and Unit Outlines. There are conditions attached to studying as a Visiting student:

  • not all QUT units are available for Visiting Studies. You may have a restricted choice of units.
  • QUT charges up-front tuition fees to study individual units as a Visiting Studies student.

Things to keep in mind when you are considering upgrading

Seek as much advice as possible from your guidance officer, QTAC and QUT staff. Before deciding on a pathway confirm your choices. We recommend you consider answers to the following questions, among others, as you make your decision:

  • Is the course you have settled on one that you are committed to study for the required amount of time?
  • Will the institution offering the course make offers in late January to people with your OP or admission rank?
  • If you study in the course will you achieve a high enough admission rank to get entry into your preferred course in the future?
  • Will successfully completed study give you any advanced standing in your preferred course if you are admitted at a later date?
  • In the unfortunate situation that you are still unable to enter your preferred course after this period of study, are there options to keep studying this pathway course and are you prepared to keep studying this course?

real experiences

Michelle Barnard-LakeI used an upgrading pathway to get into my course. After finishing Year 12, I completed a diploma as well as working full-time and used this combination to apply for my rank to get into an education degree.
