Why QUT?

[Print-friendly version]

The QUT publication Real Options (formerly Making Inroads) explains how QUT recognises a wide range of qualifications and experience in the admission process and can direct you towards study pathways.

QUT offers a wide range of avenues for entry so you may be presented with more than one pathway after considering the information in Real Options. It is hoped the information enables you to choose the pathway that gives you the greatest chance of securing a place in your preferred course.

We would love to have you study a course at QUT but unfortunately places are limited. At QUT you should consider

  • another QUT course within the same faculty, or a different faculty
  • a fee-paying place in the same course (where available)
  • a dual TAFE-Qld/QUT award course where you commence studies at TAFE-Qld and progress to QUT.

In Real Options you will notice the highest admission ranks are obtained through good results in a university bachelors course. Because QUT cannot predict the cut-off scores that will be required for entry in the future we suggest you try to achieve the highest admission rank possible, keeping in mind an estimate of the likely future cut-off for your preferred course. We suggest you first consider one of these options:

  • one full-time year in a bachelors course or in individual unit studies (called Visiting Studies)
    • normally 8 units at QUT
    • pass or better in all units can achieve a rank in the range 93-99
  • three quarters of one full-time year in a bachelors course in individual unit studies
    • normally 6 units at QUT
    • pass or better in all units can achieve a rank in the range 84-94
  • completion of a TAFE advanced diploma
    • pass or better in all units can achieve a rank in the range of 93-98
  • completion of a TAFE diploma
    • pass or better in all units can achieve a rank in the range 87-91

QUT also recognises most students wish to spend as little time as possible on their pathway and would normally study as a full-time student. QUT is aware there are a group of people for whom part-time study is the only option. In a new initiative introduced this year, studies in as few as two and up to five QUT units can now be considered in the admission decision, where previously they were ignored. As always there are a few conditions:

  • The units are 12 credit point QUT units studied at QUT within a degree or individual unit studies
  • You achieve a passing grade point average (4.00 or better) in the two, three, four or five units studied
  • Admission ranks are allocated on the basis of achieved results (grade point average).
  • There is a cap on the highest admission rank allocated. Be careful to make sure these studies achieve an admission rank sufficient for entry to your preferred course in the future
    • For two & three units: can achieve admission ranks in the range 75-85
    • For four & five units: can achieve admission ranks in the range 77-88

Application to study individual units as a Visiting Studies student are made direct to QUT on the V Form. Unit information is available in the QUT Handbook and Unit Outlines. There are a few conditions:

  • Not all QUT units are available for Visiting Studies. You may have a restricted choice of units.
  • QUT charges up-front tuition fees to study individual units as a Visiting Studies student.

If you have further questions please do not hesitate to telephone QUT on 07 3138 2000. We expect our lines to be busy during this period so please be patient or try again a little later if you have any difficulty getting through.
