Why QUT?

[Print-friendly version]

QUT allows current Year 12 school leavers to defer their QTAC offer for:

  • one (1) year if offered in January/February
  • six (6) months if offered midyear.

A current Year 12 school leaver is any student who has completed year 12 immediately prior to a QTAC offer, eg completes year 12 in November/December and receives a QTAC offer in January.

Non-year 12 students may also request to defer their QTAC offer on the basis of demonstrated special circumstances. Your request must confirm that the circumstance will not prevent you from studying after deferment.

Special circumstances are those:

  • beyond your control, ie not due to your action or inaction
  • that had their full impact on or after you were made an offer into the course, including circumstances which occurred before the offer date but where the impact worsened or the full effect did not become apparent until after that date
  • that made it impracticable for you to start your studies.

In addition to responding to QTAC, send your exceptional circumstance claim, with all supporting documentation, to QUT Admissions, Kelvin Grove, Qld, 4059 by the QTAC offer response date, as printed on your QTAC offer letter.

Course availability

QTAC deferment is available for most courses. The exceptions are courses with additional entry requirements, eg auditions, portfolios, interviews, questionnaires, Dean's Scholars, prior studies, prior work experience etc.

Please visit Studyfinder for your QTAC course's deferment status.

Applying for deferment

Requests are lodged via QTAC's response to web. Responses must be lodged by the QTAC offer response date, as printed on your QTAC offer letter.

Non-year 12 students, in addition to responding to QTAC, you must lodge a special circumstance claim, with all supporting documentation, to QUT Admissions, Kelvin Grove, Qld, 4059 by the QTAC offer response date, as printed on your QTAC offer letter.

You will receive formal notification on your deferment outcome from QUT within seven (7) working days after the final date to respond to the QTAC offer.

Returning from deferment

You will be invited in mid October of each year by QUT Admissions to take up the deferred QTAC offer. The formal offer will contain details on how to access QUT Virtual, enrolment, how to apply for Commonwealth assistance, due dates etc. Upon return from deferment you must enrol as per the deferred offer.

QUT will also send you an invitation to attend QUT's Course and Careers Day in mid-July. This provides you with an opportunity to find out the latest developments in, and to meet staff from, the faculty and course you are deferred from.

Returning early from deferment

Semester 1 deferred students who wish to return early must lodge their request in writing to QUT Admissions no earlier than 01 April and no later than 30 May. The opportunity to return early from deferment is subject to the course being offered mid-year at QTAC and places being available. Visit QUT's mid-year website at qut.com/midyear in April for course specific information. Students with granted advanced standing/academic credit will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Requests to return early to the summer program will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Such requests need to be accompanied with a statement from the student on the need to return early to summer and their proposed enrolment for summer and the subsequent year.

Conditions of deferment

You must immediately notify QUT Admissions of any changes to your mailing address and other contact details.

You are unable to hold a deferred place and study a course at QUT at the same time.

If you are on deferment and were offered a VC Scholarship, you are unable to take up the scholarship. However, you can re-apply for the VC scholarship after being invited to return for Semester 1 in the following year and by the VC Scholarship closing date, as long as you have not undertaken any other university studies during deferment.

If you were offered any other scholarship you may be unable to hold the scholarship while on deferment. Please check your scholarship status with the relevant scholarship officer.
